UHF (Ultra High Frequency) and VHF (Very High Frequency) are both types of radio frequencies used in transmiting and receiving of radio signals, which are crucial for the functioning of handheld radios.

VHF operates in the frequency range of 30 MHz to 300 MHz. Handheld radios using VHF are most effective in open, outdoor environments or on the water where the signal can travel without much interruption. VHF radio waves travel relatively farther than UHF waves on the ground. Their antennas are generally longer due to the larger wavelength of VHF frequencies.

On the other hand, UHF operates in the frequency range of 300 MHz to 3 GHz. Handheld radios that operate on UHF are particularly effective in urban or built-up environments as these higher frequency waves have a better ability to penetrate through buildings, dense forests, and urban structures. Consequently, UHF is commonly used for communication in densely populated and indoor areas. UHF antennas are typically shorter than VHF due to their shorter wavelengths.
